The short answer

Most people move their things to Mallorca with a shared truck (part load), a full truck, a few boxes by courier or their own car on the ferry. A one bedroom apartment from the UK on a shared truck typically costs around £1,500 to £4,000, and a two bedroom apartment from Germany around €1,500 to €3,500. From the EU there is no customs. From the UK, transfer of residence relief lets you skip import duty and 21% VAT if you qualify.

What’s Different About Moving to an Island

This is the part most UK and German removal companies’ websites don’t explain.

Everything Crosses by Ferry

Every truck takes a ferry from the mainland, usually from Barcelona or Valencia. That adds cost and time, and delivery dates often depend on ferry schedules.

Big Trucks Don’t Fit Everywhere

Palma’s old town and villages like Sóller, Deià or Valldemossa have narrow streets, so your things move into a smaller shuttle van, which usually costs extra.

Permits and Furniture Lifts

The mover may need town hall (ajuntament) permission to block the street, and big furniture often goes up by external lift through the balcony.

No Address Yet? Store It

Finding a long-term rental takes time, so many people arrive before their things do. Most removal companies can store your belongings until you’ve found a place.

Still looking for a home? Here’s my guide to finding a long-term rental in Mallorca.

Customs

UK vs EU: Do You Pay Customs?

Where you’re moving from makes the biggest difference to your paperwork.

Moving from the UK

Transfer of Residence Relief

Since Brexit, your belongings go through Spanish customs. If you qualify for transfer of residence relief (exención por traslado de residencia), you pay no import duty and no VAT on your household goods.

12months lived outside the EU
6months owned the items
21%VAT you avoid
  • You’ve lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months
  • You’ve owned and used the items for at least six months
  • The goods are for personal use, not business or resale
  • You don’t sell, rent out or lend them for 12 months after import
  • You apply up to six months before or within 12 months after you move

Documents to Prepare

  • Passport, plus your NIE and TIE (residence card)
  • Proof you lived in the UK for 12 months, like utility bills, council tax or a work contract
  • Proof of your new home: rental contract or deeds, plus your empadronamiento
  • A detailed inventory, in Spanish or with a sworn translation
Moving from the EU

No Customs at All

€0

From Germany, Austria, the Netherlands or any other EU country, there’s no customs. The Balearic Islands are part of the EU and its VAT area (unlike the Canary Islands), so it works like any other move within Europe.

Still make an inventory list. You’ll need it for your transport insurance if anything gets damaged.

One exception: Switzerland isn’t in the EU customs union, so Swiss movers follow the same rules as the UK.

A good international removal company handles the customs paperwork for you. Spanish customs decides case by case, so check the current rules with the Agencia Tributaria or your mover before you ship.

Do it yourself

Driving Over Yourself: Ferries to Palma

Bringing your own car or a van? These are the three main routes to Palma.

SPAINMALLORCABarcelona6.5 to 8 hValencia7 to 9 hDéniaabout 5 h 15Palma
Dénia to Palmaabout 5 h 15Baleària. The shortest crossing.
Barcelona to Palma6.5 to 8 hBaleària, Trasmed and GNV, often overnight.
Valencia to Palma7 to 9 hBaleària and Trasmed.
€150+for a car each way on the longer routes, plus passengers
€200+for a van, and €400 to €500+ at peak times

Book early for summer and avoid holiday weekends. Renting a van? Check before you book: many rental companies don’t allow their vehicles on ferries, or one-way drop-offs on the islands. And if you bring a car with foreign plates and become a resident, you’ll eventually need to register it in Spain.

Checklist

How to Choose a Removal Company

Before you sign anything, go through this list.

1Get at least three written quotes, each after a survey (in person or by video), not a guess from an online form
2Ask exactly what’s included: ferry, island delivery, shuttle van, parking permits, packing, insurance and customs
3Ask whether they deliver in Mallorca themselves or hand over to a local partner, and who that partner is
4Check the insurance: you want cover based on the value of your things, not a small amount per kilo
5For shared loads, ask for a realistic delivery window, not just the collection date
6Read recent reviews and ask in local expat Facebook groups who people actually used
7Pay a deposit and the balance before collection as agreed, but be wary of anyone who wants everything in cash

UK removal companies that are members of the British Association of Removers (BAR) or FIDI follow a code of practice, which gives you more protection if something goes wrong.

Packing

What to Bring and What to Leave

If it costs more to ship than to replace, sell it before you go.

Worth Bringing

  • Things you love or can’t replace: photos, art, heirlooms
  • A good mattress, tools, bikes and sports gear
  • Kitchen things you use every day
  • Books and clothes, including warm ones for winter

Think Twice

  • Big sofas and wardrobes: many apartments here are small or furnished
  • UK appliances: Spain uses different plugs, and most rentals come with appliances
  • Anything you’re unsure about: buy secondhand on Wallapop or Facebook Marketplace once you’re here

And yes, Mallorca winters are colder indoors than you think, so pack the warm socks.

Plan ahead

A Simple Moving Timeline

013 months before

Decide what comes with you, declutter and request quotes

022 months before

Book your mover (summer fills up fast) and, from the UK, start your customs paperwork

031 month before

Finish your inventory, confirm delivery access and arrange storage if you don’t have an address yet

04Moving week

Pack a suitcase with documents and a few weeks of clothes, because a shared load can take 1 to 4 weeks

If your dates are flexible, move between October and April. Ferries are cheaper, removal companies have more availability, and it’s also the best time to find a long-term rental.
